Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
